Marching, Tenor, Parade & Concert Drums Guide: Corps, Field & Stage
Reference guide · counts measured from photographed specimens · updated 2026-11-08
Marching and concert drums are built for projection, not the club: deep corps snares with die-cast hoops and extended snare beds, multi-tenor trios and quads on carriers, parade snares with calfskin heads for the street, and concert toms with open resonance for the stage. Ludwig Power Cut trios, Yamaha Powerlite and Corps Custom lines, and Slingerland and Leedy parade shells cover the catalog's working examples.
Fitment is the whole purchase: carrier receivers and rail drillings differ by maker and era, calfskin parade heads seat by exact diameter including the flesh hoop, and die-cast marching hoops must match diameter plus lug count exactly. A 14-inch 10-lug hoop never fits an 8-lug drum, and a concert tom with extra mount holes is a player-grade drum priced accordingly.
The tables below are measured from our own marching and concert pool -- whole drums and calfskin parade heads counted apart, live and from the archive -- so you can see exactly what the evidence rests on. Hardware with marching application suffixes (claws and rods filed as 'Marching Bass/Tom/Snare') never files here; only drums and heads do.

Frequently asked questions
Corps snare or parade snare -- which should I want?
For the field, a corps snare with die-cast hoops and carrier-ready mounts; for the street and concert work, a parade snare with calfskin heads. Both tune high and project -- condition and originality matter more than the model name.
How do I size a marching head?
Buy by exact diameter including any flesh-hoop variance -- skin seats differently from plastic. Measure the shell across the bearing edge and match the head to the shell, not to the old head's label.
Will concert toms fit my drum-set mounts?
Rarely without work: concert and marching receivers drill differently from set mounts, and carrier hardware is maker-specific. Match mounting-hole spacing center to center against your shell drilling before ordering.
What kills a marching drum's value fastest?
Re-wraps, extra holes from swapped carriers and mounts, and replaced hoops -- in that order. Original drilling with matching era hardware earns the premium; a drilled carrier conversion is priced as a player.
