Vintage Drum Fitment Master: Hole Spacing & Thread Pitch

Reference guide · counts measured from photographed specimens · updated 2026-11-08

846 measured-fitment rows in stock · 5543 in the archive. Hole spacing on 264 in stock (596 archived); thread pitch on 267 in stock (100 archived).

Two numbers decide nearly every vintage-drum parts purchase. Hole spacing — center to center between a lug's mounting holes, in inches — decides whether the part drops onto your shell without drilling. Thread pitch — 12-24 for most vintage American drums, 10-24 for older and single-tension designs — decides whether the rod threads into your lug or seizes halfway. Measure both before you buy anything.

Workflow: calipers across the shell's existing holes for spacing; a thread gauge (or a careful count against a ruler) on the old rod for pitch. Never force a rod that binds — a 12-24 rod starts in a 10-24 lug, then strips both. Metric-threaded European hardware (Sonor and friends) interchanges with nothing American; when in doubt, ask us.

The tables below are measured from our own catalog rows — title-routed fitment values, the same provenance the item pages already label — with specimen counts on every figure. For the deep dives, see the dedicated lug and tension-rod references linked below.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure hole spacing?

Calipers, center of one mounting hole to center of the other, in inches. Measure the shell drilling, not the old lug — wallowed holes lie. Match the figure exactly; same-brand lugs from different eras drill differently.

How do I identify thread pitch without a gauge?

Count threads against a ruler over a full inch, or try the rod in a known lug by hand — correct pitch threads with finger pressure, wrong pitch binds within a turn. Stop at the first bind.

Will a 12-24 rod fit my 10-24 lug?

No. It starts, then seizes and strips both parts. Verify pitch before forcing anything; every tension-rod page lists the pitch we measured.

My drum is European — do these pitches apply?

Often not: older German hardware uses metric threading that no American rod fits. Source Sonor-threaded parts specifically, and ask us before ordering American rods for a European shell.
